Car hits pole; woman critically injured

A 25-year-old northeast Indiana woman was critically injured in a crash early Sunday in DeKalb County.

The victim, Hannah G. Bercot of the Butler area, was going south on DeKalb County Road 61 shortly before 2 a.m. when the passenger-side tires went off the west side of the road on a curve near County Road 22, according to the sheriff’s department. It said the 1999 Chevy Prism drifted left of center and was overcorrected, crossing back over the center line and off the west side of the road, striking a utility pole.

The sheriff’s department said Bercot, who lives in the area of the crash, was not wearing a seat belt and had a number of injuries, including a skull fracture. She was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital.

Police believe alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

The Butler police, Waterloo Marshall’s Office, Butler Fire Department, DeKalb County EMS and Parkview Samaritan assisted the sheriff’s department.
