Weighty Matters: Teen Edition – Journey toward health

Say hello to the Fit Crew.

Beginning Monday, eight area teens will participate in The Journal Gazette’s Weighty Matters: Teen Edition, a three-month weight-loss program that will focus on helping them establish healthier lifestyles.

The Journal Gazette is partnering with the YMCA and Lutheran and Parkview hospitals for the project.

The teens, who are ages 13 to 18, each will receive a free YMCA family membership, meet with dietitians from Lutheran and Parkview hospitals, and attend wellness programs and meetings with personal trainers.

Readers can follow the participants’ health journeys each Sunday with weekly updates on their progress in The Journal Gazette and through their blogs online at The teens will write about their efforts, workouts, tips on eating and their overall experiences.

In addition, Salem Albayyari, a Northrop High School senior who lost 100 pounds, will help mentor the participants. He also will blog about his experiences through Salem Says at
