FORT WAYNE – Two Fort Wayne residents lost their lives in one day to traffic crashes.
Late Thursday, 30-year-old Jabaar R. Wilcox was killed when a vehicle ran him over on Pontiac Street near Fruehauf Drive, according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
Wilcox was lying on the road before the car hit him, the coroner’s office said.
About 11 p.m., police got a call of a pedestrian being struck in the 2800 block of East Pontiac Street.
When emergency responders arrived, they found Wilcox in critical condition.
He was taken to a hospital where he died.
Police do not know why Wilcox was in the road.
The coroner’s office said his cause of death of blunt force trauma and ruled the death accidental. He is the eighth traffic fatality in Allen County this year.
The coroner’s office also released the name of the man who died early Thursday after the van he was driving crashed into a pond near Huntertown.
Elijah M. Tanner, 32, was headed south on Lima Road near Hathaway Road when the work van he was driving crossed into northbound traffic and launched about 50 feet into a pond, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
Whether he died from the impact with the water, drowned or had some sort of medical issue that caused the crash is unknown.
The coroner’s office said the cause and manner of his death were pending.
Tanner’s van was completely underwater when rescuers arrived. He was still belted in to the driver’s seat when divers freed him from the vehicle.
Tanner was taken in critical condition to a hospital where he died.
A witness to the crash told police the van suddenly swerved across the road into oncoming traffic, but what caused that sudden maneuver was not known.
Tanner’s death was the seventh traffic-related fatality this year in Allen County.
