GOP gay-marriage platform plank advances

An effort to remove gay marriage language from the state GOP platform has been defeated by a panel of Republicans at the party’s state convention at Grand Wayne Center.

Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann on Friday rejected a move to remove the language and said it was out of order. Opponents of the gay marriage language then appealed to the party’s 10-member resolutions committee, but lost on a divided vote.

The language defines marriage as between a man and a woman, but also recognizes that other nontraditional families make valuable contributions to society.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long and House Speaker Brian Bosma have endorsed the language. It now goes to all delegates on Saturday.
