Driver dies after crash into pond

A driver of a work van that lost control on Lima Road and went into a pond early Thursday died at a local hospital, according to Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel, Allen Count Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Officers were called to the pond north of Hathaway Road just after midnight. A witness told officers the white van was going south when it crossed the median into the northbound lanes and then went off the road into the pond.

The Fort Wayne Dive Team and Huntertown Fire Department assisted in getting the driver out of the water.

The driver was transported to a local hospital in critical condition where he later died, Tinkel said in a statement.

The crash remains under investigation.
