Columbia City wins late

Freshman Morgan Bales had a home run, and the Columbia City softball team defeated Mississinewa 5-4 on Friday night in a Class 3A sectional semifinal at Ossian.

Down one run, the Eagles won with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Mississinewa outhit Columbia City 10-9 at Norwell.

Allie Vodde and Alyssa Hansen had doubles for the Eagles, who got two strikeouts from winning pitcher Amanda Sands.

Columbia City will face Norwell in the sectional championship game at 11 a.m. today.


NORWELL 5, BELLMONT 4: In Decatur, Ryan Tomlin was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBI for the Knights in a Class 3A sectional at Bellmont. Today, the Knights will face Heritage, which defeated Mississinewa 5-0.

SOUTH ADAMS 9, EASTSIDE 5: In Monroe, the Starfires were paced by pitcher Eric Pimentel, who struck out eight and walked one, while allowing six hits and five runs over five innings in a Class 2A sectional game.

Derek Wanner, Collin Affolder and Pimentel had two hits apiece at Adams Central.

Affolder replaced Pimentel on the mound in the sixth inning and allowed two hits and no runs, while striking out one in two innings of work.

Eastside’s Conner Dove and Terry Nickolson both had two hits.

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 18, HAMILTON 1: At Blackhawk, the Braves were up 4-1 before unleashing eight runs in the top of the third inning in a Class A sectional.

Aaron Jones was 1 for 4 with a run, a triple and four RBI.

Nathan Targgart was 2 for 4 with four runs, a triple and three RBI.


CARROLL 156, CONCORDIA 180, WOODLAN 209: At Autumn Ridge, Hunter Davis posted a 1-over 37 for the Chargers, while teammate Trent Boyle had a 38. Cam Boyce had a 40. Kevin Dant shot a 41. And Jacob Buckland added a 42.

Concordia’s Cam Weikart carded a 38. Teammate Jack Wert shot a 44.

Leading Woodlan with a 47 was Micah Koeneman and Tyler Kern with a 52.

WHITKO 188, WEST NOBLE 196: In North Manchester, Daniel Zawlocki paced the Wildcats with a 5-over 41 at Sycamore Golf Club.

Teammmate Will Peters had a 45, while Cole Bechtold had a 47. Matt Hathaway added a 52 for Whitko.

West Noble’s Aaron Miller and Tim Dice posted 47s.

Grant Moser shot a 50.

NORTH SIDE 201, WAYNE 223: At Brookwood, Wayne’s Max Lanning was the medalist with a 1-over 37.

North Side was paced by Mike Kelley’s 45 and Cody Terry’s 48. Noah Wester added a 53.

Wayne’s Mathew Swanson shot a 51.


Blackhawk Christian coach Sarah Ernst has resigned, athletic director Jamie Perlich said. Ernst was 66-36 in three years and won three sectional and two regional titles.
