TinCaps win 5th straight game on Ossian native's home run

The TinCaps bolstered their lineup with the addition of pitcher Ronald Herrera and then defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 3-2 on Thursday, extending their season-best winning streak to five games.

After losing eight straight road games, the TinCaps (24-29) have won back-to-back games, including Wednesday’s come-from-behind 12-7 victory in Kentucky.

This one required a rally, too, after the Hot Rods (24-29) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on Armando Araiza’s RBI single.

In the fourth, the TinCaps tied it on Adolfo Reina’s RBI single to center field. And in the seventh, a home run by Ossian-native Josh VanMeter put the TinCaps ahead for good.

It was his second homer of the season.

Herrera joined the San Diego Padres organization Wednesday, completing the May 15 trade with Oakland, which got former Fort Wayne player Kyle Blanks for Jake Goebbert.

Herrera, signed as a non-drafted free agent by Oakland in 2011, had been with Beloit of the Midwest League. He was 3-4 with a 3.38 ERA in nine starts.

The TinCaps placed pitcher Coby Cowgill on the disabled list.
