Worker accused of forging checks

A South Whitley woman was charged with two felonies after her employer told police she stamped his name on nearly two dozen checks she wrote herself.

Nicole A. Born, 30, was charged Wednesday with forgery and theft for the events that took place from January to March, according to the probable cause affidavit.

In mid-March, the owner of Outdoor Detail in Fort Wayne went to police after he realized 20 company checks were written and paid to Born, the report said.

Born was in charge of employee payroll at Outdoor Detail and is accused of using the owner's signature stamp to sign checks Born made out to herself, totaling $3,585, the affidavit said.

The owner told police Born stopped coming to work after she found out about the company's internal investigation.

Born told police she did write some of the checks and used the money to buy synthetic marijuana and cleaning supplies for the business and to rent a hotel room for her children.

She was not in custody Wednesday evening. A warrant for her arrest has been issued.
