Hoosiers still receiving annoying and unwanted telemarketing calls have until Tuesday to meet the next deadline for the state’s do-not-call list.
Residents can register their landlines, cellphones, prepaid wireless numbers and Voice over Internet Protocol numbers with the state’s registry at www.indianaconsumer.com, according to the Indiana Attorney General’s Office.
The number of complaints the office receives from Hoosiers about unsolicited calls is dropping, but there are still thousands a year.
Of particular focus are robocalls, or automated calls without a person on the other end of the line.
More than half of the 14,000 do-not-call complaints received last year involved robocalls, according a statement from the attorney general’s office.
Two years ago, the attorney general’s office received about 1,000 complaints regarding robocalls each month, and it has now dropped to 550.
Since January, nearly 4,000 complaints were registered for any type of unsolicited call.
Each year, the largest category of complaints with my office still involves robocallers. It’s clear that more must be done, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said in a statement.
He was a strong supporter of a resolution passed this year by state legislators that requested the Federal Communications Commission to do more to regulate telemarketing and robocalls.
