TinCaps' bats quiet in 4-2 loss at Lansing

The TinCaps couldn’t have asked for much more from their pitching staff Monday night.

Payton Baskette and two newcomers to the bullpen allowed only three earned runs in a 4-2 loss at Lansing.

The offense failed to hold up its end of the bargain before 1,391 at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts’ Tom Robson retired 17 consecutive batters after Mallex Smith led off the game with a triple. He scored on Dustin Peterson’s RBI groundout.

That was the only run allowed by Robson (2-3), who gave up two hits and struck out eight.

Baskette (0-1) pitched well in his fourth start, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

The TinCaps (12-18) got contributions from relievers Eric Yardley and Tony Wieber, added Monday from extended spring training. They combined to allow one run in 2 2/3 innings.

Righty Erik Cabrera and catcher Ryan Miller were transferred to short-season Eugene as the TinCaps reinforced a weary staff.

Lansing (15-15) gave up an RBI single to Dane Phillips in the seventh.

The Lugnuts went ahead 3-1 in the sixth on Peterson’s 14th error.
