Fire heavily damages family home

FORT WAYNE – The Red Cross was called to help a family of six after a fire struck a house before dawn Sunday in the Lafayette Place neighborhood.

Firefighters were called to 4519 Kenilworth St. at 6:03 a.m. When they arrived, smoke and flamers were coming from the front of the one-story house, according to a statement issued by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

An adult and one child were out of the house, it said, but bystanders were worried that more people were inside. Searching the building, firefighters determined that the house was empty.

The fire department said five children and one adult would need to find another place to stay.

The house was heavily damaged by the fire, the fire department said. It said the cause was under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
