High school roundup: Gym Rats celebrating 20th year

Two decades ago this weekend, Bill Hensley helped start a travel team basketball tournament in Lafayette that led to the formation of the Gym Rats organization.

Gym Rats moved to Spiece Fieldhouse and the facility has been playing host to top-quality youth tournaments since.

Several future NBA players have competed in Gym Rats events over the last 20 years.

The 2014 Bill Hensley Run-N-Slam at Spiece Fieldhouse and other locations around Fort Wayne honors Hensley, who died in 2007.

The tournament runs today through Sunday on the 20th anniversary of the original tournament.

Games on Courts 1 and 2 at Spiece will have live streaming all weekend at www.gymratstv.com.

The original event in 1994 drew 32 teams. The 2014 Run-N-Slam will have 224 teams with some of the top high school boys basketball players from Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, New York, Washington and Michigan, among other states.
