Indy eyes $29 million plan to beef up police force

INDIANAPOLIS – City officials in Indianapolis are considering a proposal for about $29 million a year in tax increases in order to increase the police force size by nearly 300 officers.

The debate comes as the city has already seen more than 50 criminal homicides this year, which is a pace for the highest tally in seven years.

A City-County Council task force recommends increasing the income taxes dedicated to public safety. It also backs eliminating a homeowner tax break previously proposed by Republican Mayor Greg Ballard.

The proposal would boost the city police force from about 1,500 officers to nearly 1,800 by 2018.

Democratic Councilwoman Mary Moriarty Adams led the task force and says the city’s top priority should be hiring police officers because many people don’t feel safe.
