JG garners 14 awards in statewide contest

The Journal Gazette won 14 awards, including five first-place awards, in the Indiana Associated Press Media Editors Contest.

The awards were presented Friday during a banquet in Indianapolis.

Newspaper staffers who won awards:

Ben Smith – First place, non-deadline sports reporting, “Tragedy still with Cougars,” about a fatal crash involving the University of Saint Francis football team’s bus in October.

Chad Ryan – First place, sports photo, and first place, feature photo.

David N. Benson – First place, headline writing.

Tom Pellegrene Jr. – First place, best use of digital platforms.

Jeff Wiehe – Second place, deadline news reporting, “Gunman killed by police,” about a 22-year-old man whom police killed when he fired at them in May.

Justin A. Cohn – Second place, deadline sports reporting, “Baer Field mourns loss in respected racing family,” about a man and his grandson, both of whom were associated with Baer Field Speedway and who died in a crash while repairing a semi on Interstate 69 in July.

Steve Warden – Third place, feature writing, “Measuring victory over epilepsy,” about how a 9-year-old girl fought epilepsy with her family’s help.

Samuel Hoffman – Third place, sports photo.

Corey McMaken – Third place, headline writing.

Jim Touvell – Third place, Page 1 makeup.

Karen Francisco – Third place, editorial writing.

Ben Smith – Third place, sports column writing.

Swikar Patel and Dan Stockman – Third place, multimedia package, “Without her I’d have nothing,” about a man who stood by his wife during her 40-year fight with multiple sclerosis.
