Three students injured when car collides with bus

Three students were injured in Defiance, Ohio this morning after a car failed to stop behind a Millcreek-West Unity Local school bus according to a statement from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Deborah Connolly, 62, of West Unity, Ohio, was driving the school bus on US20A east of milepost 9 when she stopped with her red flashing lights and stop sign activated to pick up a student.

A car driven by David Whitman, 61, of Montpelier, Ohio, approached the school bus from behind and drove off the road to avoid colliding with it, the statement said.

Whitman’s vehicle struck the right rear of the school bus, and debris from his car struck and injured a student waiting to get on the bus.

A report said 20 students were on the bus at the time of the collision, and three claimed injuries. The injured students were treated at the Millcreek-West Unity School by the Williams County EMS, and Whitman was cited for assured clear distance and a stopped school bus violation, the statement said.

The crash remains under investigation.
