Rebuilding work restricting US 31 near South Bend

SOUTH BEND – State highway officials are restricting traffic on U.S. 31 near South Bend to one lane in each direction as part of the project upgrading it to interstate standards.

The agency on Monday started the lane restrictions for a section about a mile long just south of the U.S. 20 bypass. The restrictions on the section that averages 29,000 vehicles a day are scheduled to continue into July.

Highway department spokesman Matt Deitchley says drivers should try to find alternate routes.

Construction is continuing on about 15 miles of new roadway between South Bend and Plymouth.

That’s all part of a $1.2 billion reconstruction project for U.S. 31 linking Indianapolis and South Bend. Other major parts include the new bypass around Kokomo and highway upgrades in the northern suburbs of Indianapolis.
