Two Fort Wayne men are charged with dealing marijuana after police said they found 582 pounds of the drug at a home on the city’s north side.

Luis E. Perez, 49, and Alvaro A. Rivera, 23, were arrested Tuesday after a special agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit got a tip that 550 pounds of marijuana was headed to Fort Wayne, according to Allen Superior Court documents filed Wednesday.

The Allen County Drug Task Force and federal authorities watched an exchange at a local store parking lot near Coldwater and Washington Center roads and followed the recipient to a home where police watched what looked like several bales of marijuana being unloaded, court records said.

Police said the home was in the 8000 block of Auburn Road.

As police searched the home, they found the 550 pounds of marijuana they were seeking, plus 32 1-gallon bags with 1 pound of marijuana in each, court records said.

Allen County police said the street value for the total weight was more than $580,000. Police said they also found large scales, likely for weighing pounds of marijuana at a time; a small set of scales for selling smaller amounts; and pills that were not yet identified.

Police said Perez and Rivera, both of the 9500 block of West Cove Court, refused to talk to police after their arrests. Perez was being held without bail and will be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement when his local case concludes, jail officials said. Rivera was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.
