Sex offender faces 3rd no-register count

A Fort Wayne man with two convictions for not registering as a sex offender is now facing a third charge for the same offense.

Jerry L. Bayes, 49, of the 4900 block of Dwight Drive, was charged Wednesday with failure to register as a sex offender, a charge that is enhanced to a more serious felony as a result of his prior convictions, according to documents filed in Allen Superior Court.

Bayes, convicted in 2003 of two counts of child molesting, told police he was living at the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission but was in fact staying at a family member’s house, according to the probable cause affidavit.

When police this month went to check on Bayes at the rescue mission, an employee told them he moved out at the end of September, court records said.

Police said Bayes showed up at the sex offender and registration notification office later that day and was confronted by police about his whereabouts. He was being held Wednesday in lieu of $10,000 bail.
