4 escape burning home on St. Marys

Four people escaped injury Tuesday when a fire ravaged their house just north of downtown.

Firefighters arrived about 6 p.m. at 1037 St. Marys Ave. to find the rear of the home and porch consumed by fire, according to the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

The fire also spread to the kitchen of the two-story house, the fire department said.

After firefighters extinguished a fire burning outdoors, they moved inside the structure and doused a blaze in the kitchen.

The flames were so intense they caused damage to a neighboring home, the fire department said. Two adults and two children escaped the home before firefighters arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
