Probation systemís tragic shortcoming

Indianapolis residents are reeling over the death of Nathan Trapuzzano, who was shot and killed in the parking lot of a West 16th Street business while he exercised early the morning of April 1. Trapuzzano, a Ball State University graduate and a computer programmer at Ivy Tech, was looking forward to celebrating the birth of his first child, his first anniversary and his 25th birthday in May.

Simeon Adams, 16, has been charged in the slaying. His arrest reminds us of the important role probation officers hold in keeping communities safe. The Indianapolis Star reports that Adams was free to roam the streets for a month while awaiting a hearing on 13 probation violations, including nine violations of his house arrest.

When probation officer Tracy McDonald checked on Adams on each of those nine visits, the teen was not at his West 34th Street home. McDonald could have asked for an arrest warrant after the third violation, which would have kept Adams in detention until his April 7 hearing date and off the street where he allegedly crossed paths with Trapuzzano.

McDonald has resigned.
