VanMeter sparks TinCaps rally

Norwell graduate Josh VanMeter scored the tying run in the ninth inning and the go-ahead run in the 11th to lead the TinCaps to a 6-4 win Saturday over the LumberKings in Clinton, Iowa.

VanMeter pinch ran for Dustin Peterson in the ninth and scored on a Fernando Perez ground ball.

In the 11th, VanMeter reached first on a fielding error, went to second on a walk to Ronnie Richardson and later scored on another Perez ground ball. Richardson then scored when Dane Phillips grounded out.

Franmil Reyes’ seventh-inning two-run homer gave Fort Wayne (3-6) a 3-2 lead.

Zach Shank and Martin Peguero scored in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead for the LumberKings (5-4).

Tayron Guerrero (2-0) pitched two innings for Fort Wayne. He gave up two hits and struck out two. Lars Huijer (0-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Clinton. He gave up five hits, five runs (two earned) and struck out two.

The TinCaps finish the series against the LumberKings today at 3 p.m.
