Weekend warrior: Kathy Long

Kathy Long spends most of her Saturdays sorting through letters.

The letters of the alphabet, that is.

She is the founder of a Scrabble group that meets every other Saturday with one goal in mind: Find the best word for the most points.

Long says she likes the challenge of putting letters together to form a word.

“I’m a very competitive person,” the 62-year-old Fort Wayne woman says. “I like to win.”

Her best word play so far was a seven-letter bingo. For those uninitiated in the board game, a bingo is when a player uses all seven tiles for a word. It’s worth 50 points, plus whatever the word would normally score.

What made this Long’s best word was that it covered two double-letter squares. She doesn’t remember the word.

Long has been playing Scrabble for about 50 years, she says. She started the Scrabble group after moving back to Fort Wayne from Phoenix.

The group has about 10 members with skill levels ranging from beginner to tournament. They meet at different locations, such as restaurants and the Allen County Public Library. Upcoming games and their locations are posted at www.meetup.com. Just search for “Fort Wayne Scrabble” under the groups.

Long says she enjoys the social aspects of the game. She is a nurse at Heartland Home Care, and there are three other nurses in the group, she says.

Her ultimate goal, she says, is to retire and then play Scrabble every day instead of just on weekends.
