It wasn't pretty, but the Mad Ants got their first-ever playoff win today in Reno, Nev.
After trailing by as many as 13 points, the regular-season champions got a 97-96 victory over the Reno Bighorns, in front of 1,586 fans at the Reno Events Center.
Matt Bouldin led the Mad Ants with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Tony Mitchell had 17 points on 7 of 24 shooting.
Ron Howard added 19 points for the Mad Ants, who return to Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. Sunday for Game 2 of the best-of-three series.
Fort Wayne had taken part in only one playoff series before this, getting swept by favored Santa Cruz last season.
The Mad Ants were down 94-86 with 1:50 remaining in the game, but a pair of Bouldin free throws sparked the 10-3 closing run.
Tim Ohlbrecht's layup with 5.8 seconds remaining was the difference, and former Fort Wayne player Walker Russell missed a shot at the buzzer for Reno.
The Bighorns were led by Mo Charlo's 22 points.
