INDIANAPOLIS – Officials say a 60-year-old woman has died after a fire at an Indianapolis apartment building where another woman jumped from the second floor to safety.
Fire Capt. Rita Reith said flames were coming from the two-story building when firefighters arrived about 4 a.m. Thursday at the complex on the city’s northwest side.
Reith said residents heard one woman yelling for help from the second floor and pulled out a mattress that she jumped onto. She said firefighters rescued another person with a ladder.
Reith said the husband of the woman who died told crews he had fallen asleep with food cooking on the stove. He was able to escape but the woman was not. Two people were slightly injured.
