Gun fires at Y, hurting its owner

A small handgun inside a gym bag discharged at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA on Monday morning, injuring the owner of the firearm.

Police were called to the YMCA, 2323 Bowser Ave., about 11 a.m.

The bag was in the Y’s locker room, and the bullet from the gun grazed the chin of the owner, according to a statement from the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne.

That person’s injuries are not life-threatening.

The statement added that the YMCA’s “current policies prohibit carrying or concealing a weapon or any object that may be used as a weapon in our facilities and on our grounds.”

YMCA officials are evaluating current policies in light of the episode in “order to ensure a continued safe environment,” the statement said.
