Fort Wayne Police investigate an attempted robbery at The Smoke House Tobacco Outlet at 2217 S. Lafayette St. on Monday. The owner of the business, who was not identified, died later, police said.

The owner of a Lafayette Street tobacco shop died following an attempted robbery Monday morning, and Fort Wayne police said tonight they are seeking a suspect seen on a surveillance camera.

Police said they were called to The Smoke House Tobacco Outlet, 2217 S. Lafayette St., about 9:30 a.m. on a report of a man down inside the business. They did not identify him, but later said he was the owner of the business.

Police said the robbery suspect is a black man who appears to be right-handed, and was wearing a red ball cap with an emblem on its face.

They said he was wearing a two-toned outer jacket that is gray over the shoulders that run the length of the sleeves. The sleeves appear to be gray on the top half with black on the bottom half, police said. They said the jacket goes from gray on the shoulders to black midway down the body of the jacket.

Anyone with information that can lead to the identification of the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 436-STOP or the Fort Wayne Detective Bureau at 427-1201.

The Allen County coroner's office will identify the victim once his next of kin has been notified, police said.
