Death in fight ruled homicide

Asphyxia declared as cause

The death of a man Saturday after an apparent fight has been ruled Allen County’s second homicide this year.

Darrell King, 45, of Fort Wayne, died from “asphyxia due to neck compression and position,” according to a statement from the Allen County Coroner’s Office after an autopsy Sunday afternoon.

Homicide is a death due to the actions of another person.

Police responded about 5:15 p.m. to a home in the 2000 block of Gladstone Drive and found an unresponsive man. Medics took the man, later identified as King, to a local hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.

A fight between King and another man occurred before police were called to the home on Fort Wayne’s south side, according to a police statement. What the fight was about is unclear. Saturday night, police said they had detained a person of interest for questioning.

The Gladstone Drive neighborhood was quiet and peaceful Sunday, although a number of cars surrounded the house where King was found. An unidentified woman who answered the door said the family did not want to talk to anyone about King.

“This just happened, and we are not ready,” she said and went back inside.

She came back out to tell a neighbor not to talk to a reporter because the neighbor “did not know Darrell.”

No new information was released by Fort Wayne police Sunday. Detectives had been working to establish a relationship between King and those who might be involved with his death.

No charges had been filed early Sunday night, said police spokesman officer Chris Felton. The death remains under investigation, Felton said.

King’s death is the first homicide this year within city limits. The other county homicide occurred Jan. 19 when Damian J. Miller II, 32, was shot outside the Dupont Bar and Grill.
