South-side house damaged by fire

A Fort Wayne home had heavy smoke damage and moderate fire damage after a fire broke out on the first floor early Saturday morning.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded about 2:30 a.m. to the home in the 600 block of Kinnaird Avenue, south of Lutheran Park on the city’s south side.

When crews arrived they found heavy fire coming from the rear of a large, three-story house, according to firefighters.

Assistant Chief Mike Miller said most of the fire damage was to the exterior, but flames did enter the interior of the house.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and firefighters were able to contain the fire to the first floor and rear of the home.

Miller said the fire was under control in about 30 minutes.

Once the fire was under control, firefighters did an extensive search of the home to make sure there was no fire concealed in the walls as they cleared the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
