Scam calls hit Williams County

The Williams County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that many calls have come in about a telephone scam.

A man calls from 917-460-9945 and says that you have won a sweepstakes cash prize and all you have to do is provide a $500 deposit to claim it. He sometimes claims he is with Publishers Clearing House.

He will want the deposit in the form of a MoneyPak. After you get it, you are supposed to call him back. When you do, he asks for the 14-digit code on the MoneyPak, which gives him access to the money.

“You might as well burn $500 as that is the last you will see any of that money,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement distributed Thursday.

The sheriff’s office said that legitimate sweepstakes never require a down payment.

It urged residents not to send money or reveal credit card information to anyone unless you are certain you know them or you initiated the contact. Do not share your internet information, and make an action plan with friends and family so that you talk to others before responding to such solicitations.

To report a scam or ask questions, call the sheriff’s office at 419-636-3151.
