Local resident to serve 3 years in neglect case

A 28-year-old Fort Wayne man was sentenced Wednesday to a total of three years in prison for abusing his girlfriend’s son in August.

Brandon M. Sprinkle, of the 7900 block of Decatur Road, pleaded guilty this month to neglect of a dependent, a Class C felony punishable by up to eight years, as well as battery, a Class D felony punishable by up to three years.

Sprinkle was arrested after his girlfriend took the 3-year-old to the emergency room, where doctors found bruises on his head, legs, arm and pelvic area, according to court documents.

The child had been left in Sprinkle’s care, and he admitted to having to “spank him a number of times,” according to court documents.

Sprinkle has previous convictions for domestic assault with intent to inflict serious injury and child endangerment in Iowa, according to court documents.

Allen Superior Judge Fran Gull sentenced Sprinkle to three years in prison with an additional two years suspended and to be served on probation on the neglect of a dependent charge. She sentenced him to an additional 1 1/2 years in prison on the battery charge but ordered that sentence to be served at the same time as the sentence on the neglect charge, according to court documents.
