Navy: Sailor, civilian suspect killed at Va. base

– NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — The Navy says a sailor was fatally shot and the lone suspect killed by security aboard a guided-missile destroyer docked at the world's largest naval base.

Naval Station Norfolk spokeswoman Terri Davis says the suspect in the late Monday shooting was a civilian who was authorized to be on the base, but she couldn't say whether he had permission to be on the destroyer, the USS Mahan.

Davis says the sailor killed also was a man but gave no other details about him. She says the Navy will release both men's names once their families have been notified.

Davis says the base was briefly on lockdown, but operations have returned to normal. She would not describe any other circumstances of the shooting.
