Less than 24 hours after defeating the Wings in an overtime shootout, the Komets could not repeat the feat as they lost 5-3 in Kalamazoo on Sunday afternoon.
The Wings (39-19-6) opened the scoring at 1:59 of the first period on a power-play goal from Dustin Cloutier.
The Komets responded five minutes later with a power-play goal from Mike Embach.
Fort Wayne scored another two goals before the end of the first period, a short-handed goal from Scott Fleming and a goal from Aaron Clarke.
That was the end of the scoring for the Komets, but their lead didn’t vanish completely until the third period.
Cloutier scored the only goal of the second period at 19:40, and Ludwig Blomstrand leveled the score with his first goal at 8:32 of the third period.
Blomstrand gave the Wings the lead five minutes later, and Justin Taylor secured the Kalamazoo win at 15:39.
Kalamazoo scored three goals on only nine shots in the third period.
Matt Grogan made his third start for the Komets in the net. Grogan saved 22 of 27 shots.
The win leaves Kalamazoo alone in first place in the Eastern Conference standings, one point above Reading.
With eight games left in the regular season, the Komets travel to South Carolina Friday and Saturday for back-to-back matches against the Stingrays.
