Suspect arrested in Meijer store theft

A man suspected of stealing from one Meijer store and trying to steal from a second store has been arrested, Fort Wayne police said.

Police released photos of the man Wednesday and asked for the public’s help identifying him. He has been identified as William David Whetsel Jr., 39, of Fort Wayne.

Police said he tried to take three car batteries and two shirts from the Illinois Road Meijer on Tuesday, but he left the store without the items after being confronted. He stole from the Lima Road Meijer, police said.

Whetsel was being held on two active warrants on failure to pay child support and will face a misdemeanor theft charge, police said.
