Harsh Indiana winter raises spring fire danger

– Indiana’s harsh winter is creating springtime fire dangers.

Firefighters is southwestern Indiana’s Daviess County have fought at least nine grass fires so far this week. Washington Township Volunteer Fire Chief Tony Wichmanin tells the Washington Times-Herald the cold weather killed off a lot of vegetation.

Washington Fire Chief Dave Rhoads says high winds are contributing to the problem.

The National Weather Service posted a warning for an enhanced wildfire danger Friday for several southern Indiana counties. It says a low relative humidity and winds gusting near 30 mph will create dangerous conditions in which fires could spread out of control quickly.
