Meijer theft suspect arrested

The Fort Wayne Police Department said the man who is suspected of stealing from one Meijer store and trying to steal from a second store has been arrested.

Police released photos of the man Wednesday and asked for the public’s help identifying him.

He has been identified as William David Whetsel Jr., 39, of Fort Wayne.

Police said he tried to take three car batteries and two shirts from the Illinois Road Meijer on Tuesday, but he left the store without the items after being confronted.

Whetsel was being held in the Allen County Lock-up on two active warrants on back child support and will be facing a misdemeanor theft charge for his involvement in the Meijer store incident, the police said.
