Police academy applications open for 2015

– The Fort Wayne Police Department is seeking candidates for a 2015 academy class. The application process will begin today and continue through May 1.

Candidates should apply online at www.fwpd.org or www.cityoffortwayne.org.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens; complete a pre-employment fitness test; be 21 to 35; and have a high school diploma, a GED certificate or the equivalent. Education beyond high school is preferred, according to the department.

Candidates must have correctable vision to 20-30 in each eye, have a valid Indiana driver’s license and live in Allen County or an adjacent Indiana county.

They should be physically and mentally able to perform job functions of a patrol officer, have excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to serve others, the department said.

Candidates should be free of felony criminal activity or domestic battery.

The drug-use policy includes no marijuana use within three years and no other illegal drug use within 10 years.

Applicants are not allowed to have sold, distributed, manufactured or transported illegal drugs or used prescription drugs or legally obtained substances in a manner for which they were not intended within three years.
