Area schools tweak plans to make up 1 more day

– Wednesday’s snowfall caused local school districts to return to the drawing board as officials determine how to make up for another missed day.

Fort Wayne Community Schools will extend the plan to make up for missed time by adding more extended days to students’ schedules.

Students will now attend an extra hour of school each day from March 3 to April 23.

March 28 will not be an extended day, as many families plan to leave for spring break, school officials said. Spring break is from March 31 to April 4.

The extended days will allow the district to make up five days.

The remainder of missed time will be made up on scheduled make-up days May 9 and May 23 and at the end of the year. The last student day will be June 6.

Southwest Allen County Schools students were required to complete additional eLearning courses in lieu of attending classes Wednesday.

SACS is using eLearning courses – online lessons to be completed at home after school or on the weekends – to make up for five missed days.

Students in middle and high school will follow a schedule to complete 30 hours of online instructional time, and elementary students will complete 25 hours.

The last student day will be June 4.

The last student day was scheduled for June 4, but district officials said Thursday they would make up for Wednesday by ending the school year on June 5.

NACS students are making up time by adding one hour for middle and high school students and 50 minutes for elementary students.

Students will also attend an extended school day today to make up for the missed extended day Wednesday.

East Allen County Schools students are also attending extended school days.

By adding a half-hour to the end of each school day and forgoing the 30 minutes of teacher collaboration time on Wednesdays, the district will make up for two additional missed days.

The last student day is June 6.

EACS officials said Thursday they would discuss the plan to make up for Wednesday’s missed day during next week’s school board meeting.
