Results show that academic programs, school safety and past school performance remain the most influential school choice factors.

FWCS releases school choice survey report

Statement as issued Friday morning by the school district:

Fort Wayne Community Schools is sharing the results of a School Choice Survey taken by parents and community members in the fall. More than 2,000 people provided feedback on the factors that influence where to send their children to school.

“We are committed to providing high-quality, innovative programs that ensure student achievement,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson said. “Hearing from the community allows us to examine the factors around school choice in order to keep improving our schools.”

The survey was designed and analyzed by independent technology and communications firm K12 Insight, and explored topics such as school support services, school environment and school location, among others.

This is the second year this survey has been conducted as part of an ongoing communication initiative designed to increase transparency, trust and collaborative decision-making. By obtaining data on the awareness of school choice options, the priority given to school environment, measures of school success and the availability of student support services, the district can ensure that it is meeting the educational needs of the entire community.

According to the survey, 97 percent of participants have a child who currently attends a school in the district, which is a 28 percent increase from last year. Results also show that academic programs, school safety and past school performance remain the most influential school choice factors, while a safe school environment is the most influential school environment feature. Class size as a significant influence decreased from 57 percent last year to 39 percent this year.

The report is available for public view on the district’s website, www.fortwayneschools.org. Click the YourVoice icon.

Going forward, district leaders will use the results in making decisions on school choice offerings.

“It is critical that we continue learning what influences parental decision-making around school choice,” Robinson said. “This survey provides us with essential data that we can use to foster a high-quality learning environment that prepares every student for a successful and productive future.”
