DWI blamed in fatal chase at South By Southwest fest

AUSTIN, Texas – Police say a man and woman died after a drunken driver fleeing from arrest crashed through barricades set up for the South By Southwest festival and struck the two and others on a crowded street.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said 23 others were injured, five of them critically, in the incident around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. He said the two people who died were on a moped that the motorist hit along with pedestrians who were leaving a club where a concert had been held.

The chief said the man also struck a cab before jumping out of his car and trying to run. Officers shocked him with a stun gun and took him into custody.

Acevedo said the man faces two counts of capital murder.
