Woman leaves $4.6 million to Elkhart foundation

– A woman who planned DePauw University’s Walker Arboretum and also was instrumental in the building and landscape design of the Goshen College Music Center has given $4.6 million to a northern Indiana charitable foundation.

The Elkhart Truth reports that Mary Elizabeth Walker established the gift with the Elkhart County Community Foundation as an “endowed donor advised fund.” She died on Dec. 19, 2011. This year, the gift will allow $230,000 to be granted.

Walker set guidelines for who will receive grants. Her alma mater, DePauw University in Greencastle, her church, Trinity United Methodist Church in Elkhart, and any youth-serving organization could be possible recipients. Walker’s children will advise the fund.

The foundation received a $150 million gift from the estate of former resident David Gundlach two years ago.
