Mastodons bow out

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- In the end, the Denver Pioneers did what was necessary: They weathered the storm.

Leading 35-28 after a first half in which they trailed only once and dominated the Mastodons at the 3-point line behind guard Paige Bradley and underneath behind bigs Desiree Hunter and Alison Janecek, the Pioneers were rocked by a 19-4 IPFW run coming out of halftime, then scored 13 of the next 15 points to regain a lead they would never again lose.

Final score, in the Summit League tournament quarterfinals: Denver 79, IPFW 73.

Bradley led the Pioneers with 24 points, Kailey Edwards added 14 and Morgan Van Riper-Rose 12 to lead Denver (8-22). Amanda Hyde scored 28 points in her final game -- 22 of them in an incredible second half -- and Haley Seibert added 16. The Mastodons end their season 15-14.

But not without a fight.

Denver still had to survive a furious rally that took the Mastodons from a double-digit deficit to within two, at 71-69, on Rachel Mauk's driving layup with 47.7 seconds to play.

But Theresa Wirth made a layup inside, the Pioneers made their free throws and Bradley made a huge steal with 7 seconds left to seal it.
