Snowmobile rider injured in lake crash

A snowmobile struck a mound of hardened snow Wednesday on Big Cedar Lake, sending it into the air. When it came down, it flipped end over end, throwing the rider onto the ice, officials said.

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 3:08 p.m. from a resident who saw the crash and then the rider lying motionless on the ice, according to Indiana conservation officers.

When conservation officers arrived, they found Paul Bennett, 55, of Columbia City, on the ice, being tended to by lake residents. Officers said he was alert but had a number of injuries, none life-threatening.
