Snowmobile rider hurt after crash on icy lake

A snowmobile struck a mound of hardened snow Wednesday on Big Cedar Lake, sending it into the air. When it came back down, it flipped end over end, throwing the rider onto the ice, officials said.

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department got a call at 3:08 p.m. from a resident who saw the crash and then the driver lying motionless on the ice, according to a statement from Indiana conservation officers.

When conservation officers arrived, they found Paul Bennett, 55, of Columbia City, on the ice, being tended to by lake residents. Officers said he was alert but had a number of injuries, none life-threatening.
