Coats wants Russia punished

Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., announced Wednesday that he has introduced a resolution that would penalize Russia for sending troops to neighboring Ukraine.

Coats’ proposal would, among other things, expel Russia from the Group of Eight industrialized countries, suspend the Russia-NATO Council, reduce diplomatic representation between the U.S. and Russia and suspend seasonal work visas for Russians.

It also would have the governing body of world soccer reconsider its decision to play World Cup matches in Russia in 2018.

“The proposals are designed to isolate Russia and would inflict real pain on Putin and Russian interests,” Coats, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement. “Some of these ideas can be accomplished unilaterally, while others require us to lead our allies toward broader agreement.”

During a Tuesday speech on the Senate floor, Coats said Russian President Vladimir Putin “has imperial ambitions, motivated by his pathological insecurities and a quest to restore lost glories. These are dangerous delusions that, if not confronted firmly, could come to threaten us all.”
