Norwell pitcher suspended for season

Norwell senior pitcher Jonah Patten has been suspended for the 2014 season, Knights coach Andy McClain confirmed Wednesday.

Patten violated the school’s athletic code of conduct for having chewing tobacco. It was Patten’s second offense in two years after missing the first half of last season for the same reason.

A second violation results in a missed season.

“It’s disappointing,” McClain said. “He made a bad decision.”

Last year, the Arkansas recruit was 4-0 with a 2.07 ERA for the Class 3A state champions.

The right-hander didn’t pitch in the 3A state title game against Jasper, but he did knock in both runs in a 2-1 Knights’ win.

McClain said Patten might try to play in a showcase league in Iowa.
