Driver, 2 dogs die when train hits car

– Authorities said a South Bend woman and her two small dogs died Sunday after a freight train struck her car at a crossing.

St. Joseph County police said the collision Sunday morning killed Vicky Long, 60, of South Bend. Witnesses told officers the woman drove her car around crossing arms and into the path of the train at a Norfolk Southern crossing just west of South Bend Regional Airport.

Police said it appears all warning systems were working at the time of the crash.
