Ex-Wabash County bookkeeper faces 5 felony charges

A former bookkeeper with the Wabash County Clerk’s Office was arrested Friday morning, accused of taking about $75,000, Indiana State Police said.

Sara Chamberlain, 44, of Urbana, was charged with three counts of theft, one count of official misconduct and one count of corrupt business influence, according to a statement issued by state police at Peru.

State police said the investigation by Detective Tony Frawley began in September after an Indiana State Board of Accounts audit indicated that funds were missing in accounts controlled by the clerk’s office.

Police said it is believed that Chamberlain misrepresented the dollar amounts of fees paid to the clerk’s office and deposited some of the money into her personal bank account.

She was being held in the Wabash County Jail on a surety bond of $12,500 plus an additional $1,000.
