Indiana House lawmakers to debate banning gun buy-backs

– An Indiana House panel is set to review a bill to ban gun buy-back programs.

The House Public Policy Committee will hear the bill Tuesday. The measure to ban local governments and police from holding buy-back events passed the Senate 28-21 last month.

Gun buy-backs sometimes are used to give residents an outlet to get rid of guns without penalty.

Republican Sen. Jim Tomes of Wadesville co-authored the bill and says guns could be sold undervalued through buy-back programs. Opponents argue the measure takes the choice to hold a buy-back event away from cities and police departments.

If the panel approves the measure it then will need support from both the full House and governor before becoming law.
