Explains how a diverging diamond works

INDOT

I-69, Dupont interchange work to begin by mid-April

Statement as issued Tuesday by INDOT:

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Fort Wayne District announces that work will begin for the I-69 and SR 1/Dupont Road interchange modification project by mid-April, weather permitting. The bridge deck will be modified, and the ramps will be upgraded to fit the diverging diamond design.

The interchange will be converted from a traditional diamond to a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). When entering the DDI, drivers will crossover to the left side of the bridge, guided by signals, signs and pavement markings. This configuration efficiently allows drivers to maneuver to and from I-69 with little to no delays. Traffic congestion is reduced by eliminating the left-turn phase from the traffic signal cycle.

Statistics show this type of configuration reduces right angle and rear-end crashes. Also, the gentle curves and low speeds reduce the number of injury-related crashes by 50 percent. As for capacity, research shows that mobility will be increased for SR 1/Dupont Road corridor.

Often the cost to construct a DDI is less than a traditional diamond interchange. The same is true for this particular project. Since widening was not required, right-of-way acquisition was unnecessary. This DDI will be constructed one half at a time, i.e. eastbound construction, then westbound construction. Traffic will be maintained during construction, with the exception of two weekend closures across the bridge. The ramps will remain open at all times.

This project includes a protected walkway through the center of the interchange which will connect the multi-use paths east and west of the bridge. In addition, there will be some intersection improvement work at the intersection of SR 1 and Parkview Plaza Drive.

Brooks 1st Construction was awarded the bid for $3.5 million. The completion date is November 2014. This is the first DDI in Indiana.
