West Jefferson Boulevard will be restricted to one westbound lane near the viaduct at Catalpa Street at 9 a.m. Tuesday because of concrete pouring, the city of Fort Wayne has announced.

A temporary detour for eastbound traffic will use Freeman Street, Taylor Street and Broadway, the statement said.

Motorists will have access to one lane in each direction tonight, it said.

This winter's freeze-and-thaw cycle has caused damage to many area roads, including West Jefferson, a major artery linking downtown Fort Wayne to the southwest side of the city.

On Sunday, repairs began on West Jefferson between Lindenwood Avenue and West Main Street. A city contractor is performing a complete concrete reconstruction of a 250-foot section of the boulevard.

Because of extremely cold nighttime temperatures and the amount of time needed to cure the concrete, the construction is now expected to continue into next week, the city's statement said.

Until 9 a.m., eastbound traffic has been shifted into one westbound lane, leaving one lane of traffic in each direction for Jefferson. The city is warning motorists to expect delays and urging them to plan alternative routes.

Alternative east-west routes include Bass Road/Spring Street, State Boulevard or Taylor Street.
